A female's role in streetwear

Despite the fact females are not specifically targeted in the streetwear community, surrounded by skateboarders and male styled clothes, they still have ways of being involved and even taking streetwear further.

@hypebeast

Palace released an advertisement on the red buses in London earlier this year, causing controversy considering the photograph entails a female adult holding four Palace shopping bags. In an outsiders point of view, someone with not much knowledge of the brand, they would look at the advertisement in confusion, as Palace is thought to be a male skateboarder brand. They could also interpret it in different ways, such as, as it is an adult woman, is she holding these shopping bags as a present for her sons? This is another popular opinion of those who do not shop at Palace as they think children get their parents to spend all this money on the clothes fulfil their child's desire rather than the children saving up their money themselves. This is true in some aspects because children as young as 8 queue up outside Supreme and Palace, as seen on youtube videos or when I have walked passed these shops early on a Thursday or Friday morning. Other buyers use these clothes to buy and resell in order to gain profit out of these clothes, so even by the age of 13 they could be earning money for themselves.

In my own situation it is a bit of both, I purchased clothes from Supreme with money that I had saved up from birthdays and so on, then Palace clothes is more of a brand that my parents know I like, so for Christmas, which is usually after Palace's last winter season, then I would ask for clothes from there. Palace is a walk-in shop so when it is open I would go in and browse, if you want to purchase limited pieces though then you would have to buy them off someone else online for more money than retail price. The woman in the photo could just be shopping for herself as I would be, that is the mystery of Palace, they clearly chose that photograph to encourage thoughts and perhaps to catch female attention on the streets of London to question where the smartly dressed and busy woman got her clothes from!

Women in streetwear's style can vary, if you want to go smart and wear a smart dress that is not streetwear you can make it street with some silver jewellery whether it be necklaces or rings, then you could also add either high end shoes and a streetwear branded side bag. If you want to be more smart/casual then wide leg trousers/culottes with trainers and a streetwear tee would be perfect. If you want to go for a relaxed look then I would suggest bottoms or tracks (ralph lauren logo men pyjama bottoms or champion/kappa tracksuits that have become more popular) but I would not overdo it with the usual logos as the whole point of streetwear is that it is unique so do not follow the crowd. Then when it is a warm day, I would definitely recommend over sized streetwear tees with high end sunglasses. That is my word of advice for the girls in streetwear, but anything that you choose to wear could easily be made part of streetwear with as little as one item, for example, I have a places+faces bag that I take everywhere that adds street to the outfit.

As you can see in the photograph above, Kendall Jenner is wearing a supreme box logo tee, and Cara Delevingne is wearing supreme boxer shorts underneath white tracksuit bottoms. The female models are wearing streetwear brands to high end fashion events, where much of the press and interviewers would be documenting their outfits and perhaps asking them on their choices. Social media would find a way to share these photos on all platforms to inspire other young females who perhaps look up to Delevingne and Jenner. Therefore, female models on social media have an important role in the publicity of these streetwear brands and specifically the publicity of females wearing streetwear. There are also lots of Instagram accounts featuring girls in streetwear specifically, and they tend to post photographs of their outfits in order to inspire others. Another point to note is that a Palace advertisement was in the May 2018 Vogue issue, this is a big step for Palace, but more importantly Vogue is considered a magazine for the women, involving a lot more female fashion and females on the cover, hence why other male magazines were released too. Therefore, if Palace is now advertised in a women magazine, it would encourage the average vogue reader to look more into the brand.

Lastly, the sense of inclusivity of females in groups have increased, such as, The Basement, a streetwear community that have a group chat on Facebook that I am lucky to be a part of. It involves the buying and reselling of clothes but also general discussion on any topic but it is the fact that people do question people in the group chat as a whole, despite each of us being a different age and gender and even living in as different place in the world, yet we are somewhat similar in our tastes, especially in fashion. The girls in The Basement are as active as the men in the group chats, voicing their opinion, and selling their own clothes, proving that streetwear is for females as much as it is for men.
